THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.

AUCKLAND NOMINEE SELECTED. By Tehyraph- — Press Association. WELLINGTON. Last Night. Alfred George Varshal!, M.A., the nominee of the: Professional Board of Auckland University . College, was to-day elected New Zealand Rhodes scholar for 1911. The other candidates whi presented themselves before the Beard of Selection were-r David S. Smith. L.L.8., Victoria College; H. Montague Ongley.Otago University. The Board met at Government House, the personnel being as follows—His Excellency the Gov- ' ernor, in his private capacity, Sir Robert Stout, Mr Justice Cooper, and Professors H. B. Kirk, Victoria College; A. P. W. Thomas, Auckland University College; Gabbatt, Canterbury College, and P. Marshall, Dunedin University. Mr Marshal! is twenty-two years of age; and was born in Northern Wairoa, and is the sen of Rev. Mr Marshal], Methodist minister now stationed at Otautau in Southland, and is an "all-round man," just such a one as the founder of the Scholarships wished to benefit. Mr Marshall, in his application to the Board, stated that he has followed through New Zealand a course of education from the Primary School to the University, supporting himself entirely from the age of sixteen years by means of scholarships and demonstratorships, and finally the degree of M.A., wilh first-class honours in mathematics and mathematical physic?.lMr Marshall has had a most successful career, both as a scholar and an athlete. r lhe Auckland University Professor of Mathematics says of Mr Marshall: "His work has impressed me particularly by its extreme thoroughness and accuracy. Though I have had several students who have been very sucessful in my subjects, I have had none with minds more severely logical and penetrating. Other Profejsprs. under •vh'im Mr Marshall Auckand, wrote of him in similar complimentary strain, reference being made to his mental alertness, quite unusual ability general high character, and engaging personality.
