THE PRICE OF SHEEP.
HOW IT AFFECTS THE WAIRARAPA. The announcement made in the Wairarapa Age yesterday morning; that there had been a reported fall in the price of slieep in Hawke's Bay and other parts was almost the sole topic of conversation among farmers who came to town on Wednesday. Was the report foundejd on "fact? If it was, how, would it affect the Wairarapa? "These were the questions x ,asked on all sides. Enquiries made from auctioneers showed that, if the drop had occurred, they had no knowledge of it. " Those' in well-informed circles, however, admitted that the; prospect of a fall had been discussed for several days, and in some quarters it was freely stated that the present price of wethers, viz., 15s and 15s 6d, could not be maintained, even in the Wairarapa. Against this, it is stated that buyers are continuing to operate at the prices named. As" prices have been gradually rising since the opening of the season,- it is . declared that a considerable drop at the present juncture would materially benefit the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, whose works at Waingawa >—* are ready for opening. This Company will not, it is stated, buy wethers at the prices ruling, viz., 15s and 15s 6d, which are said to be abnormal. We may state that, so far as Hawke's" Bay is concerned, we have every reason to believe that the price has.fallen, as stated yesterday. Whether it will affect prices in the 'Wairarapa, remains to be seen. The % price of lambs has not, apparently, been affected.
