MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Master ton Boro:tgh Council was held last evening, there being present—His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. M. Coradine. and Crs, J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T. Hoar, R. Rigg, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice and W. Morris. i'he Mayor .reported that, as a result of the conference with the County Council, the latter body had agreed to pay half the cost of lowering the gas mams at the northern approach. The 'Jlerk reported having inspected the gravel pit on the Borough's reserve at Mangaone, from which the Eketahuna County Council desired to procure gravel.—On the motion of the Mayor, i-: was decided that the Eketahuna County Council be permitted to remove metal from the reserve, provided the lessee does not object. An application from Mr O. Pragnell for permission to use a threequarter inch water pipe instead of a half-inch pipe was deferred for a special meeting of the Council. The Mayor and Cr. Pauling were appointed to sign the contract with the Westport Coal Company. A letter was read from the Railway Department, mainfaming its position in regard to the light at the railway crossing. —On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided that the 1 Minister be written to on the tubject. A notification was leceived that Mr D. J. Cameron had been appointed an assessor to act on behalf lof Mr W. Lenz before the AssessI nient Court in respect to the claim of Mr Lenz for £lB7 compensation. —'lhe Mayor was authorised to take a legal opinion on the whole question, and Mr W. B. Chennells was appointed assessor for the Borough. The Mayor reported adversely upon the proposal to give the manager of the abattoirs a bonu3. He stated that he did not believe in the bonus system. The question of salary could come up next year. The usual grant of £25 was made to the Mastertorj Technical School.
