AMUSEMENTS.

THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES. A NOTABLE ATTRACTION.. Every seat in the Foresters' Hall was occupied last evening long before the performance was timed to commence. The change of programme presented included some capital films, chief amongst which was the race for the sculling championship of the world ,-etween Dick Arnst, of New Zealand, and Ernest Barry, of England. This picture is one of the most interesting cinematographic subjects yet shown in Masterton. In the opening we have views of each candidate practising in the river,, accompanied by his trainer and .supporters. Then follows the preparation for the race, the two champions embarking, and the subsequent race, which, being taken from the judge's launch accompanying . the scullers enables one to witness it from start to finish. ~ The final struggle to the winning post shows both men to be in a distressed condition, but Arnst finishing the stronger of the two. It was a particularly clear picture, and was greeted with rounds of applause. Supporting this "star" attraction is an exceptionally fine range of dramatic, comic, scenic, and in - stnictivo su , -^' J -\ Of the dramas, "Tin Fire Chii'i s Daughter" was a film of thrilliiHj: interest, depicting a realistic iive scene in New York, the brigades turning out, and a gallant rescue from the burning building. Next in merit is "The Secret of a. Glacier," A traveller is miss-

ing, and a guide, who was in his company, is accused of having either murdered him or lost Tiim among the snow-clad mountains. He is expelled from the "companionship, of the guides." The traveller's body is subsequently found buried in a glacier,' and another guide admits having thrown, the man over the cliffs. The other dramatic studies are- equally good, while '£Tie comics are real "screamers," "Aunt at the Boat Race," and "Ferdie's Vacation" being the pick. This splendid programme will be repeated this evening and to-morrow night.
