OBITUARY.

.. MRS BAKER EDDY. (Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock.) NEW YORK, December 4. The death is announced of Mrs Mary' Baker Eddy, the founder and leader of the Christian Scientists. (Mary Baker Glover Eddy was born at Bow, New Hampshire, Unitjed States, and was the daughter of Mark and Abigail Baker. She was married three times* She was a Congregationalist, and discovered Christian Science in 1866. She began teaching it in 1867, and organised the Church of Christ in Boston in 1871. In 1881 she was .ordained' to the Ministry, and founded the Mass Metaphyseal College at Boston in the same year. Her publications were Science and Health, with Key to Scriptures (the Text-Book of Christian Science); also many other works on the subject.) MR H, S. MASON, OF GLADSTONE. The death occurred at his residence at Gladstone yesterday morning of Mr H. S. Mason, one of the oldest and best known settlers in that district. The deceased was born in London in 1818, and arrived in New Zealand when he was a boy. Upon his arrival in the Wairarapa lie was employed at Carter's Run, part of Avhich forms the present town of Car tort on, but soon afterwards started 'business on his own account-, and took up the work of mail contractor between Gladstone and Carterton. This business was carried out successfully for a number of years, after which Mr Mason took on farming at Gladstone. He married a daughter of the late Mr J. Strang, of Gladstone, and has a family of-nine, consisting of Messrs Sydney, Edgar, Bert, Harry, and Leslie Mason, all of Gladstone,' and Mrs E. Duffy (Taueru), Misses Kate,' Jean and Doris.Mason, of Gladstone. The late Mr Mason was President of the Gladstone, branch of the Farmers' Union, a member of the; Sonth Wairarapa County.
