TWELVE THOUSAND POUNDS AWARDED. Received December 2, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, December 1. Damages of £li',ooo were awarded against Sir John Kcnn ftr libelling the patentees of the Stud system of tramways. Plaintiffs contended that Sir John Benri, from political motives, denounced their system, which the Moderates in the London County, Council had experimented with, thereby securing its abandonment. Mr Justice Ifidlcy, in summing up the ease, said i( ua.s nut denied that the system as installed at Mile End was a failure, .ut this was attributed to the method of installing it. The jury must consider whether the words impugned referred to the system as installed, or to the whole system. He emphasised the point, regarding fair comment, that a person should get hiss facts right. The jury found that the words were defamatory and malicious; and that the words "were statements of fact, not of opinion. A stay of judgment waj allowed on payment of £51)00 into cuuit with a view to an appeal.
