MR W. H. HAWKINS.
The Pahiatua correspondent cf the Age mentioned the other day that Mr W. II Hawkins was likely to be a candidate for the Pahiatua seat in the Government interest. This is hardly surprising, if true. The Opposition was never enamoured of Mr Hawkins, and Mr Hawkins was reputedly never fond oi the Opposition. But how Mr Hawkins can reconcile the views i;e enunciated at the.last election with a candidature in the interests oi the Government, only a gentleman possessed of the versatility of a Hawkins can know. Some people will be tempted to ask, also, where Mr R. B. Ross, the present Government member, is to come in F The Government has surely not . withdrawn its support from him because he has shown a little independence during the present session. If it has, then nothing is surer than Mr Ross' re-election should he throw in his lot with the .ueform Party, with whose land policy he has always been in sympathy.
