HORTICULTURAL SHOWS.
PAST AND .PRESENT TAKINGS. "Horticus" writes to the Wairarapa\ge:—there has been some talk about the falling off in the door takings of the Masterton Horticultural Society to day, compared with fhe olden days. 11 is unfair to make, comparisons in this re=pect, because the conditions are different. In the olden days the membership was limited, and the subscription was either one guinea, or two guineas. To-day the subscription is only 10s per annum, and this entitles the family of a member to admission. In the early days the competition was between men who engaged professional gardeners" To-day it is between the cottagers of the town It does not' follow, because the door takings to-day are less than they were twenty year 3 ago, that the attendance is less. At any rate, if it is less, let us try, instead of growling, to make'it much greater.
