FIRE AT WAITARA. WAITARA, Last Night. At 3.20 this morning, a fire was discovered in the premises occupied by Messrs Rennie and Co., drapers, late W. P. Snell. The building Avas an old one, but fairly commodious, and full of light stock. The flames spread rapidly. The brigade found an excellent pressure from the re-cently-constructed water supply, and had a tough but successful fight to save G oil Bros.' large general store opposite. Rennie's place Avas totally destroyed, nothing being saved. Wilkes' (solicitor) office behind was gutted. " Tho buildings belonged to Snell. The draper's shop Avas insured for £IOOO. The solicitor's office was not insured. Mr Ronnie's stock Ava-s insured for £1,500. The whole of the insurances were in the South British office. The. origin of the fire is an absolute mystery. Mr Rennie estimates his loss at £ISOO. FATAL ACCIDENT. NAPIER, November 18. A man named William Cranny, aged 71, for many years employed at the local branch of the Bank oi New Zealand, was accidentally killed to-day. He was cleaning the outside, of a window on the second storey, when the sash cord to which he was holding broke, and he fell backwarus to tho ground, sustaining internal injuries and fracturing a hip joint. He was removed to the hospital, but died shortly afterwards. SUDDEN DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Mr Arthur Washer, for many years on the clerical staff of the Lyttelton Times, died suddenly on Saturday night, about 11.30 o'clock. Washer'went to Mr Marfelt's house on Moorhouse Avenue, and _ after having some supper, he went into a bedroom to say good-bye to a sick friend He sat down on a chair, and a few minutes after fell, forward on to the floor, dead. Dr Orchard, who had been attending Washer, states that death was caused by a clot or blood from a varicose vein being blocked in an artery- The late Mr Washer took a ' keen interest in sport of various kinas, and especially so in athletics and boxing.
