MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
o SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was hold on Friday afternoon. There were present Messrs F. W. Carey (chairman), J. B. Moodie, C. E. Daniell, C. Graham, 11. Brown, D. Donald, and E. H. Waddington. Apologies were received from Messrs M. Caselberg, W. E. Chamberlain, A. Henderson, J. B. Keith, and G. C. Summerell. The chairman said they Had met together to discuss the. questions of the Rimutaka deviation and the new street to connect Queen Street with Chapel Street. So far as the street was concerned, it was understood that the option over Mrs Russell's property would soon expire. Tt now remained for them to define a rating area. Personally, lie thought that tho Chamber had gone as far as it could in the matter. It could not send out a canvasser, ft was for the ratepayers interested to take whatever action they thought necessary. He understood from the secretary that the option over Mrs Russell's property had now been extended. If this was so, the poll on tho question of a loan might be taken in Anril.
Mr Donald pointed out that a number of ratepayers would derive great benefit were the street put through.
Mr Moodie said it was now for the ratepayers to take the matter up. Possibly the- newspapers would stir up those interested. The road was, in his opinion, urgently required.
Mr Daniell said that if ho was personally interested he would work hard for the street. He was of opinion that the fire brigade station had been put in the wrong position. After further desultory discussion the matter was allowed to drop.
The question of the Rimutaka deviation (reported elsewhere) was then discussed.
