EXIT ROOSEVELT.
After ono of the most vigorous campaigns over conducted by a single individual in the United States, exPresidont Roosevelt, the idol of the Republican Party, lias been badly defeated at the polls. He preached the doctrine of clean living, of clean politics, of clean business. But the great, consuming influence of Tammany and "graft" have proved triumphant. The Democrats have won, and Mr Roosevelt will be temporarily ioutsido the pale of politics. With his strong personality, his keen intellect, and his intense regard for humanity, however, he will not long be under .the cloud. He lias ki lulled a flame of patriotism and of high ideals which must spread and eventually consume the populace. Meanwhile, America has shown its preference fcr lucre and the abomination of graft} and the "new Republicanism" has been postponed.
