Some day the New Zealand Racing Conference will have to consider the question of starting. At the majority of. meetings in the Dominion the general arrangements are very satisfactory, but when the horses arrive at the post the trouble begins. After race meetings it is usual to read of starters being "caught in the tapes." There is something decidedly wrong when owners have to go to the expense of the training and sometimes sending horses long distances to find their chance of winning being completely spoiled by the tapes of the barrier becoming entangled with the contestants. In this respect many owners and trainers are patient and long suffering, but it is full time that steps should be taken to effect the much needed improvement m the starting department of New Zealand racing.
