THE LEG-IRONING- INCIDENT. !
Speaking of the leg-ironing incident oil his release irom jrncl at Goulburn, Mr Peter Bowling, tho miners' president, said ho stood commiserating with the others who were manacled. He bad no suspicion he was to be manacled himself. By and by hand-euli's were put on him and his comrades. Then they brought chains and commenced to attach them to his ankles. He had thought hand-cuffs bad enough, but leg-irons, to his mind, was going a step too far. He objected, remarking: "In God's name is this necessary?" The Deputy-Governor told him they had to do it. That was their instructions. He asked to see the governor, but cno of the officials remarked that it would be more than the governor's position was worth to alter it. Mr Bowling said he would not go in for politics. He had quite enough to do in the bstterment of the industrial class.
