THE OPENINC DAYS.

WAIRARAPA SUCCESSES. .(By Telegraph.—From Our Special Reporter.) s PALMERSTON N., Thursday. The Spring Show of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association opened yesterday in beautiful weather, and with record entries of stock and a large attendance of the public. As is usual at this popular fixture, the arrangements are most complete, and tho competitions and judging are being got olf well to time. , Wairarapa is well represented in . sheep and cattle classes (which are to be judged to-day.) In cattle W. Howard Booth, Carterton, (Shorthorn), and E. Eagle, Carterton, (Jersey), are well represented, and have some nice animals on exhibition. The sheep classes drew better entries from Wairarapa, and W. Perry, Pen- . rose, (Lincoln and Romney Marsh); McGregor Bros., Masterton, (Romney Marsh; A. and J. Graj, Bros., and W. B. Allen, Taratalii, and W. Rayner, Masterton, (Romney Marsh, Sontlulowns, and Shropshire Downs), and P. Cooper, Gladstone, (Shropshire) should ably represent that part of the province. The pig clases filled well, and the competition was exceptionally keen. In Berkshires, Monckton and Fetch Feilding, J. H. Sellars, Okaiawn, and the Porirua Mental Hospital were the principal exhibitors, the championships being awarded to a boar owned by Messrs Monckton and Fetch, and a sow belonging to J. H. Sellars. N. P. Neilsen, of Palmerston wa the only competitor in Tamworths, and the quality of the animals shown were not up to the standard of previous years. Better competition was . experienced in Yorkshires, but the exhibits were confined to Manawatu PWrants. P. J- Small was awarded the certificate for the champion boar, " and E. White was likewise rewarded in the sow class. x oultry was the weakest supported section in the show, only forty-four entries being received. Mr Reed, the only Masterton exhibitor,, secured two firsts and two seconds in the Buff Orpington Duck classes. The Public Schools Division drew the record entries for the show, the thirty-seven classes drawing an entrance from over six hundred pupils from children attending schools in

both Islands. Rongokokako. 'was the; most successful school oh this side • of the ranges, and the exhibits were of a most creditable order. In the writing for pupils under ten years, Alick Edmoncl and Florence Hare were awarded second and third respectively, while W. Hare and Lena Morris, from the same school, were awarded second and third place in writing, over 14 years class. 01 i\ c Napier, of Saunders Road, Eketalmna, and Kathleen Gregory, and Marvis Gregory, of Hastwell, were awarded merit cards in the freehand drawing class for pupils between the ages of 10 and 12 years. ' Hastwell was again successful in the same class for pupils between 12 and 14 years, Vivian Gregory, Lily Kjar and Agnetta Swenson being awarded merit cards. Wairarapa and Bush were very poorly represented in the Home Industries Department, and the only awards which went that way A\ere a first to W. Henson, of Raumai, and second and lie to T. Pitt, of Tarafua, in the class'for farmers' fresh separator butter. In the Photography division, Messrs F. C. Brockett, Taueru; H. S. Moss, Carterton; Frank Cairns, Masterton ; and T. C. Fowler', Eketahuna, wore the only Wairarapa competitors. The exhibits were reprefcr sentative of the whole of the DoW minion, and were of a very high order. Mr Broekett was the most successful of the foregoing, and was awarded two v.h.c.'s, one li.c., and one c. Mr Cairns was awarded' 3rd and v.h.c. m the class for juniors under 18, while Mr Fowler was awarded a h.c. in the figure class. The results of the competitions concluded to-day are:—Horse shoeing, P.
