Mr J. H. Pauling leaves Masterton for Christchurcli to-day, on a visit to the Southern Metropolitan Show. The death is announced by cable, of Mr Melton Prior, the special war artist and correspondent. A Christchurcli telegram" states that Mr Priestly leaves Sydney tomorrow to join the Antarctic Expedition. Mr Alfred Hill, of Wellington, the. well-known composer, has decided to again make his residence in Sydney at an early date. Messrs W. Fisher and W. B. Allen o. Taratahi, were visitors to tho Palmerston North show yesterday. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., returned to Wellington after the opening ceremony at the Masterton fire station yesterday. Mrs McKenzie, of Ashurst, mother of Mr W. McKenzie, cf Masterton, is at present seriously ill, and grave fears are held by her relatives as to her recovery. Mr Barry Ye'verton, of Featherston, has just been advised that, through the death of a cousfo, he is now Viscount Avonmore. Mr Yelverttin is the senior partner in tho firm of Yelverton Bros., livery stable keepers, and has been settled in Featherston for many years past. A qriiet but pretty wedding was celebrated in Eketahuna day, when Mr "Walter Sowerby, of Eketahuna, was married to Miss Alice McLenigann, of Christchurcli, Miss Waldin acting as bridesmaid, and Mr. Sowerby, brother of the bridegroom, as best man. Councillor J. P. Prentice, who has been in indifferent health for some time past, returned to Masterton on Wednesday night from a health-re-cruiting visit to Napier. His many friends will be pleased to know that his health is almost completely restored.

The Masterton A. and P. Association was well represented at thePalmerston North Show yesterday, among its prominent members who. were present being Messrs J. Strang,. J. McGregor, senr., D. McGregor senr., J. Dagg, R. J. Dagg, J. M. James, D. McKenzie, W. J. Welch, and W. McKenzie.

Messrs R. J. White and C. Pearce, representatives of the Fire Insurance Companies on tlio Masterton Fire Board, motored out to the Waingawa< freezing works after the ceremony of opening the fire station on Thursday. They expressed themselves surprised at the proportions * and stability of the works.

Mr Alfred George Marshall, M.A., at present assistant to the Professor of Mathematics at Canterbury College, was yesterday afternoon selected as Auckland's 'candidate for theRhodes Scholarship. Mr Marshall,, who is 22 years of age, has had itdistinguished career both in scholastic matters and athletics.

A very pleasing function took: place yesterday afternoon, at theresidence of Mrs A. Hoar, Wrigley Street, when about fifty friends accepted invitations to a kitchen tea given to Miss A. Hourigan, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. This popular young lady was.

the recipient of many suitable presents. Afternoon tea and some musical items contributed to the enjoyment of those present.

The Hon. D. Buddo was ' unable to be present at the Fire Brigade function in Masterton yesterday, and sent the following telegram to the chairman of the Fire Board:— ''Note that opening your new Fire Station take place to-day. With pressure of Parliamentary work at this stage of session I regret I shall be unable to be with you. Let me congratulate you on completion of building which I trust will do muchin the public interest of your town. I hope to be able to visit your station at some later date."-

The name of Mr A. P. Feilding was inadvertently omitted by speakers at yesterday's Fire Brigade function in Masterton, from the list of those who did yeoman service in the early days of the Firo Brigades in the* town. Mr Feilding for years occupied a responsible position in tluv Brigade, and on more than one occasion succeeded in rescuing personsfrom, burning buildings. One of his sons is at present a member of tlioBrigade.
