NOVEMBER NINTH.
NO LONGER A STATUTORY
HOLID *>Y
Mr J. Georgeton, agent of the La hour Department in Masterton, has received t l .e following communication from the Deputy Chief Inspector of the Department:-"In reference to the 9th November next: Apparently some question is being raised as to what is the position of factory owners and others in respect to this day. Please inform any persons enquiring, and also the Press, as to the legal position, viz., under the Factories Act there is no longer a statutory holiday on tne 9th November, which, since the death of King Edward, has been transferred to the Birthday of the present Sovereign, viz., to June 3rd. Under the Shops Act. Section 19, the Birthday of the Reigning Sovereign is similarly transferred to the 3rd June. Special days are, of course, not compulsory. Under awards: Where awards specify the Birthday of the Reigning Sovereign, no holiday can fce enforced on the 9th November, but if awards provide for the 9th November, then presumably the tame must be observed,"
