MUNICIPAL CONTRACTS.

The Legislature is wisely reviewing that provision in the Municipal Corporations Act which brings the business of a man ulio desires to servo his fellows into conflict with his public position. Whilst anything which savours of Tammanyism is to be deprecated, the public of this Dominion is quite competent to discriminate between the mercenary and the man who'is genuinely desirous of serving the community. A law which absolutely prohibits business men who occupy public positions from directly or indirectly contracting with the corporation to which he belongs is too drastic. It robs the community of the services of its best men, and is calculated to create abuses far worse than those it is designed to prevent. A judicious modification of the law is badly required.
