WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

SOCIAL IN MASTERTON

There vva3 a large attendance of members and friends at the W.C.T.U. annual ' social, held in Knox Hall yesterday afternoon. The meeting, which was of an enthusiastic and encouraging nature, was presided over by Mrs L. Devonport, president. After prayer and Scripture reading, the secretary and treasurer's reports, being of a satisfactory nature, vrere read and adopted. The Rev. C. H. Olds, in the course of an earnest address, congratulated the Union on the self-sacrificing nature of their work. The temperance workers, he said, sought to uplift humanity. The Union should not only_ see to benefit the younger generation, but should ever be on the alert to hold out a helping hand to those who were down through the influence of liquor. Mrs Captain Adams gave an encouraging address concerning the benefits of JNo-license. Salvation Army officer?, in the course of visiting, had, she said, access to many home?, and she quoted instances that had come under their notice of homes made happier, of wives thanking God for No-license, and of children being better cared for.

Mrs Tai Te Tau, who was present with a number of Maori members, spoke hopefully of work among her people, and the benefits of .No-license to the native race, entertaining great hopes for the young Maori people. The president referred to the loss sustained by the of the late Mr=iJ. Russell, who was an old and valued member of the Union.

The following items were rendered during the afternoon:—Solo, Mrs Anderson; poi dance by six Maori girls, encored; duet, Mesdames Anderson and Falla; recitation, Rev. C. H. Olds; poi dance, by Maori girls.

At the close of the meeting four members were initiated.
