MELBOURNE CUP.

AUSTRALIA'S RACING CARNIVAL.

THE CUP WON BY COMEDY KING.

AN IMMENSE CROWD

(Received Last Night, 6.30 o'clock.)

FLEMINGTON, November 1

This year's Cup meeting will long remain memorable in the annals of the Victorian Racing Club. It was fitting that the occasion should be the Club's jubilee. "Cup Day" attracted one of the biggest gatherings on record. The city was already overcrowded, and inter-State boats during the week brought over 5000 passengers, including 1000 from New Zealand and Tasmania. The weather, which was not premising on the opening i'!.iy of the meeting, cleared this moiling, and everybody was pleased. There was brilliant sunshine, and a bright sky, with a gentle southerly blowing across the course, 'the conditions could not have been surpasesd. On the lawns, an hour before the first race started, there was not standing room, while the betting ring paddock was crowded almost to suffocation.

More than usual interest was centred in the racing. The extraordinary reversals of form, and the perversity among the three-year-olds at Randwick and Caulfield, left even the best judges baffled. The performances of Comedy King, Tanami, and Alawa, and especially the extraordinary run of the New Zealand mare Artillerie in the Caulfield Cup, left the public, in ;i state of perplexity. The only really consistent performance way that of Trafalgar, who was held in firm public favour, whilst Lady Lucy had a host of admirers.

In the Vice-Regal box, in the midst of a most gorgeous gathering, Avere the Earl of Dudley and suite, Sir Thomas -. Gibson-Carmichael (Governor of Victoria), Admiral Sir D. H. Bosanquet (Governor of South Australia), and Admiral Sir R. Poore (Commander of the Australasian Squadron), with large staffs. When the horses went to the post for the Cup, every point of vantage was occupied. 'Thousands saw nothing until the horses were finishing. Comedy King always held a good place in the race, and put in fast work at the right time. Alawa galloped better than on any previous occasion, and at one time was proclaimed the winner. There was intense excitement when Trafalgar came at Comedy King. The two contested the position stride for stride along the straight, and the latter just managed to win. Artillerie was again a disappointment, running all the way in the ruck, in company with Lady Lucy. Following were the results of the racing.
