THE POLICE PELTED.

There have been serious disturbances in the northern quarter of the city. The trouble rose over die dismissal of a butcher's assistant, owing to his late arrival at work.
A mob of several thousand hooligans and women attacked the butcher's shop at night, and pelted the police witn stones.
The police charged with drawn swords, wounding many. The crowd retaliated by throwing beer bottles and fragments of balcony railings. They sang the "Marseillaise" and smashed street lamps.
