MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY.

COMPETITIONS SOCIETY FORMED IN MASTERTON.

A preliminary meeting of those interested in the formation of a Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society was held in the Exchange Hall, Masterton, last evening. Over thirty persons were present, including several ladies, and the chair was occupied by Mr G. R. Sykes, the convenor. The chairman explained that it was thought that the time had arrived when a Society similar to those which were in existence in Napier, Palmerston North, Auckland, and elsewhere should be formed in Masterton. Such institutions had proved of great educational value, and created keen interest in the various localities. There was, he said, considerable latent talent in Masterton, which required only to bo developed. He instanced the siiccess of a Mastertonian at the recent Dunedin competitions. On the motion or Mr A. H. Vile, seconded by Mr J. Pryor, it was decided that a Society be formed, to be known as the "Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society." Mr H. D. Hobenton was elected interim secretary. On the motion of Mr H. C. Robinson, it was decided that a committee of seven be appointed to prepare rules, etc., and report to a future meeting, to bo held within a month. On a ballot being taken, the following committee was appointed:—Messrs G. R. Svkes, H. C. Claughton, R. .7. Young, G. C. Branson, M. R Varnham, R. W. Robson, and A. H. Vile. A vote of thanks to Mr Murray for the-use of the ball, and to Mr Sykes for presiding, terminated a most successful meeting. It was arranged that the committee meet in the office of Mr Robson on Monday evening next.
