"WHANGANUI."

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I notice in your issue of yesterday that you have an article on the spelling of Wanganui. Probably it should be spelled with an "h," I am not an authority in the spelling of Maori words. However, J remember, many years ago seeing a proclamation in a very old newspaper, made by the then Governor, to the effect that after that date "Whanganui" was to be spelled and called ."Wanganui." The Governor in office at that time was most likely Governor Browne, but I am not certain; it might have been before his time. You could probably be able to find out. —I am, etc.,' JAMES S. LANGDON.

Our correspondent is probably right about the change to "Wanganui." Correctly speaking, however, it should be "Whanganui."
