THE VETERINARY DIVISION.
The work which is being performed in New Zealand by the Veterinary Division, under Mr C. J. Reakes, is of very, high scientific and practical value. In a quiet, unostentatious manner,. the Chief Veterinarian moves about the country, organizing, investigating and giving general advice. His services are always in request, and they are freely , given. The steps which have been taken by the Department to eradicate disease in stock have been very effective. Some time ago the proportion of tubercular cows in New Zealand was as high as 20 per cent. The percentage has now been reduced to 11.27, and it is diminishing year by year. Other diseases, such as mammitis, are being treated in a scientific and systematic manner, and there is reason to hope that the dairy herds and stock generally of the Dominion will ere long be tolerably free from disease. The Veterinary Division of the Department of Agriculture gives excellent value for the money expended upon it.
