TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.")
Great interest in the Mew Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap will be evinced by thousands of sporting enthusiasts throughout the Dominion during the next ten days. For the principal event of the year there is no pronounced favourite at the present time, but the popular selections are Diabolo Bst 31bs, Bridge Ist lOlba, Ingoda 7st lOlbs, and Mavtist 6st 81bs. Others, at short prices in the betting market are—Oiyoi Bst lOlbs and Los Angelos 7st 81bs. So far Diabolo has not been a lucky performer, having won but one race. He has, however demonstrated his ability to compass up to two miles and a quarter in gcod time. Consequently he is a stayer,, and as he will be landed at the post in Cup condition, should run a sterling good race. Bridge is greatly fancied by his connections. His best performance was winning the Hawke's Bay Cup, one mile and a half, in 2min 36sec, carrying 7st 101 bs. At Trenthan>, the other day, he won the Wainui Handicap, one mile, thus proving that his condition is right. InsgoJa has been doing very satisfactory work at Riecarton, and track watchers there consider the Stepniak —Armigera mare will be very hard to beat. Those who saw ber win the St. Leger in Wellington in May last have little doubt as to her staying capability. Martist, by Martian, sire of Danube, has come into prominence tough his winning"'form down South recently. W-.th his light weight he may prove good enough to trouble the top-weights at the end of the journey on November sth. Oiyoi is a'performer of decided merit, as last season he scored in the Gore Handicap and Cup, Dunedin Cup, and dead-heatted in the Timaru Cup, with Tikitere. In the Dunedin big event he carried 9st, and ran the mile and a half in 2min 35 sees, a capital performance, Los Angelos, by San Francisco—La Valiere, has generally been rioted for brilliancy, and so far has won in races over six furlongs. Last week, however, he registered good time at Riecarton for a mile and a half. During the next week candidates that may come into the market more prominently than at present are Sandstream, Taskmaster, Sir Antrim, and Kopu. . Ihe Stewards' Handicap list includes some very brilliant performers, and the race bears a very open appearance. Boanerges is the present favourite, .while other popular selections are Penates, Form by, Equitas, Bliss, Perle d'Or, and Glenspring. During the next few/days the track work at Riecarton by many of the candidates may throw some light on the probable result, and give a. better idea of the likely starters.J
