TRENTHAM RACES.
NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Our Special Reporter.) Racing commenced wtih the Rimutaka Handicap, of six furlongs. In a field of fourteen, Directoire was favourite. Inspection and Varna were in front to the home turn, where Dearest came through and soon .had the race in keeping. Mcitv Frank p\it in a fast run at the finish, and ran second. For the Shorts Handicap the withdrawal of Multiple, St. Toney, Penza and Parewanui left eight to go to the post. Boanerges was mostly fancied, while Penates ran close up in the public estimation. From a good sendoff, Nauinai, attended by Theodore, led into the straight. Penates then took up tbc running, and opposite the , People's Stand looked like a certain ' winner. .Boanerges, however, put in I a brilliant run on the outside, and won by a neck. The full field of twelve competed in the Hunters' Steeplechase'. Waioiiika, a double winner at Martinborough, was installed favourite. In the first round. Star Lass showed the way, but entering the straight ran •on to the wrong course. In the ; second round, Don Carlos took up the running, and jumping in splendid style, won by two lengths from Mahara, with Hill Lass a good third. Sylvia Maid stopped at the brush fence at the far side in the first round. | The defections in the Wellington Handicap were Bollin, Merrie Zealand, Coronctted, Swimming Belt, and Lord Kelvin, leaving a fine field of thirteen to go to the post. Lady Medallist was a strong public order. Sir Tristram was first to show out, but Wiminera quickly took tip; the. running, and led right round to the turn of. the straight, where Lady Medallist joined him. The favourite then went to the front, and from then out easily held her own, and won comfortably by a length and a half from Sir Antrim and Wiminera. There were only five starters in the Spring Selling Plate, and Idealism was backed down to an exceptionally short price. Moreykoff was in front for a furlong, when Succession deposed him. In the straight Grand Jewel got to the front, and won by a neck from Succession. Tribulation was looked upon as the greatest certainty of the day, when the starting numbers went up for the Wainui Handicap, and nothing else was backed at all spiritedly. The favourite was first out from the barrier, and led right through down to the grandstand. While his victory was being loudly proclaimed Bridge galloped to the front and won by a head. The Wellesley Stakes brought out a field of six two-year-olds of a highclass character. The Achilles—Bluewater filly, Peirene, was the popular selection, Miscount being next in the estimation of backers. This pair were first away, and although Miscount galloped very freely, Peirene scored by half a length. Thirteen sprinters lined out for the Final Scurry. St. .Toney was a hot favourite. He was in front from the rise of the barrier, and won very easilv from Bow Bells.
