THE FIRE SERVICE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In his letter of yesttrdxy Mr McEwen wishes to know whether in my opinion Masterton needs so many firefighters to deal with the outbreaks of fire that occur here. My opinion is there are too many men. in our fire service, and that fifteen men, well equipped, should stop the average fire that occurs here. Many towns much larger than Masterton work their fire service quite as well, if not better, than Masterton with about half the men we have, and with much less expense. In conclusion, I would ask Mr McEwen to look through the U.F. B, A. statistics for 1909 very carefuliy, then, no doubt, he will be of the same opinion as myjelf—that with a well-managed and properly equipped fire service 25 men would be ample for this town. — Thinking you for space, lam, etc., B. GARDNER.
