THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.
MINISTERIAL PROMISES SUSPECTED. The Napier Telegraph is another Minsterial journal which is beginning to strike out on a line of its own. It printed the following editorial note the other day : It i 9 reported-, as will be noticed by ■ a reference to our general news columns, that there is a likelihood of the Napier to Gisbornc section of t ! e Fast Coast railway being commenced before the next general elections. These in the natural order of ■ things will be sprung upon us in about a year from now. We are, then, it seems, only about that length of time off a "commencement." But, as one cannot be too csreful it may be appropriate to consider what should be understood by the word we have p'aced between the inverted commas. What really seems to be asserted is that some time before the next general elections "the first sod will be turned." Of course, this will be something, for without a beginning there can be no end, but such a beginning as this might mean no more, in reality, than a little arrangement to construct the premanent way at a mile a year. Seeing that the Ministry has been compelled at lastjto acknowledge the need for constructing this railway, it seems that if boasting is to be indulged in with a view to the next general election, some more substantial justification than a Ministerial turning of a first sod seems to be suggested.
