TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.")

The handicaps for the Masterton meeting appeared punctually to time. For the greater part the allotments bear evidence of careful thought, and a really good precentage of acceptances should result. In the Hurdles there ia very little to cavil at, for the adjustments appear to be very equitable. Tina loa, 9st, a winner at Namer Park, heads the list in the Flying Hack, in which British Maid and Miss Sylvia, Bst 21ns, read well. iWerrie Land, Bst 121bs, has been given a chance, but as he recently had an attack of influenza he cannot be at his best yet awhile. For the Cup, Sir Frisco, 9st, will doubtless be a popular selection, as he has been let off somewhat lightly on account of his backward running at utaki. Iranui, Bst lOlbs, Clemora, Bst 31bs, Merrivonia 7st 121bs, Penza 6st 71bs, aie also well treated. In the Dash Hack, five furlongs, sprinting form is represented by IVlerrie Land. Lady Dorris, Lares, Longstep, Palestine, and Kiltie Lass The latter, in at the minimum, 7st 71bs, has certainly shown better form than others in the same weight such as Subdue, Fighting Maid, Merrie Widow, and Avaunt. The Flier, 7st lOlbs, should certainly not be called upon to give weight to anything in the race. A good field should be seen j in the Publican's Handicap, of seven furlongs. Lord Soult and Full Rate are not overburdened at 9st2lbs; Sunbonnet, Bst 4lbs, has not been up very long, so may not be ready. Merrie Rose, 7st 31bs, is nicely in, and so is Afterthought at the minimum, 6st 71bs. Her owner will not feal particularly flattered at the Mer j-riwee mare being on the same low mark as the extremely moderate Clem. If, however, Penza is any-. thing like as- good as reported, the Finland—La Gloria mare must be j absolutely thrown in with 61bs. Itf is said teat she has been backed in i douoles for the L..J.C. Stewards' j Handicap, and if this be so, may not make her appearance at tne Masterten meeting, notwithstanding her low allotment. First Consul, 9st, heads the list in the October Back, but there is probably no reason why he should give weight to First Battery Bst 9bls, who has scored in better company. On his Martinborough form Pukewai would have bten let off with less *than Bst 51bs, and he may not be able to give weight to Torpcint, Bst 31bs, a recent winner, i
