MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

,—o . —. ENGINEER'S REPORT. THhe following is the report real by the Engineer (Mr D. McLachlan) at the monthly meeting of the County Council yesterday: — OPAKI RIDING. Matahiwi Road.—Surface repairs to the extent of 200 cubic yards have been laid on the northern end of this road.

The branch road fenced off through the Matahiwi Estate has Been made passable for wheel traffic. As directed, I have examined the overflow from the Lansdowne Dam and notice that a considerable back scour has taken place during the past four or five months. I think that the erosion should be checked as soon as possible and estimate that it will take a sum of from £25 to £3O to make a sound waterway at the points mentioned. Ruamahanga Bridge.—The redeeking of this bridge is about completed. Robert's Street.—Contract No. 235: Forming 11 chains of footpaths, etc., has been finished and taken off the Contractor's hands. TE WHITI RIDING.

Robinson's ;Road.—l have inspected the road giving access to Mr Robinson's property aixd find that a boggy creek is the main obstruction to his outlet, on to a partially metalled right-of-way. An outlay of about £4 or £5 would culvert and make a crossing to the creek. UPPER TAUERU RIDING.

Poison's Road.—As requested I paid a visit of inspection to the above road and find that the bridge beyond Mr Wilton's is of a very slight build. The span is 23 feet with only four 12in by 6in stringers. The decking, too, is only two inches thick. The bridge is unsafe for heavy loads. The supplementing of three additional stringers with an extra two inch' deck oil the present would render the bridge safe for any load that might be required. I have also estimated the cost, £4 10s, of erecting handrails to the 27feet stringer bridge on the same road —complained of as dangerous by Mr Smith. WAINUIORU RIDING. I

Weraiti Road.—A gang of men are employed reducing the steep grade at the Taueru Bridge. I should recommend that the remodelling of the road between the Taueru Bridge and the Saddle be executed preparitory to metalling this season. Blairlogie-East Coast Road.—Some metal patching to the weaker portions of road were made during the past month and the road is now in fair condition. jcviversdale Road.—Contract No. 229: Forming and culveting 50 chains of road—let at last meeting. Tliis contract has not yet been commenced, but the contractor has stated he will start the work immediately.
