COURT RETURNS.
The quarterly returns for the Supreme Court sittings in Masterton to September 30tn] are as follows:—In the hearing of criminal cases the Court sat on one day and heai'd one in dictment, in which the person was acquitted. In civil jurisdiction the Court also sat one day. One ordinary writ was issued and case discontinued. One motion was heard in chambers and the Court sat one day in banco and received one appeal from an inferior Court. In divorce and matrimonial causes the Court sat one day and one petition was filed and tried by Judge, a decree nisi being anted. Probates were granted in
x estates end three administrations were made. Registrations of chattel securities totalled 58, memoranda of satisfaction 1, and searches 50. Two debtors'petitions in bankruptcy were heard and one adjudication was annulled; wlile six discharges were granted. There were two applica- ■ tions to conduct sales under the Property Law Act. The fees received from bankruptcy totalled £2s'J 2s and from other than bankruptcy £B3 14s, making a total of &109 6s. The quarterly returns showing the business done in the Masterton Magistrate's Court up to September 30th are as follows: —Number of sittings presided over by the Stipendiary Magistrate, 6; number of cases heard, 56; aggregate amount sued, for, £1249 17a; aggregate amount recovered, £530 0s 8d; number of applications heard in Court in Chambers, 1C; orders made other than! judgment summonses, 9; plaints en ■) tered, 158; distress warrants issued, ] li; judgment summonses issued, 37; orders made on judgment summonses, 15; warrants of committal issued, 4; summonses and other processes served by bailiff within two miles, 156; over two miles,- 48; distress warrants executed by bailiff within two miles, 12; over two miles, 1; warrants of committal executed by bailiff, 3; civil fees paid in stamps, £IOB 4s. >
Forty-nine males and five females were taken into custody during the quarter, seven of whom were discharged for want of prosecution or evidence. Five were dismissed on their merits and 12 were summarily convicted, while 35 were fined. The criminal fees received in stamps totalled £8 9s, and the fines £ 3O lis, making a total of £69.
