QUESTION OF HOLIDAY.
MASTERTON KACES AND CARTERTON SHOW.
A petition, signed by forty-five tradespeople of Masterton was presented to the Masterton Borough Council last evening, asking that Friday, October 28th, be proclaimed a half-holiday this year, instead of Thursday, the 27th, on account of the first day of the Masterton races being held on that day. The iv'ayorstated that it was usualto hold the half-holiday on the second day of the Carterton Show. The Clerk pointed out that the Council had already agreed to an application from the Wairarapa A. and P. Society to "close on the Thursday.. Mr A. J. Hathaway, secretary of the Racing Club, who was present in support of the petition, asked that the request of a large number of. tradespeople should be considered. The Mayor stated that the Carterton people had received notification. that Thursday was to be observed as the holiday. At the same time, thewishes of the local tradespeople should be regarded. Cr Morris thought it was- somewhat discourteous to treat the Carterton people differently to what had been done in previous years.. Cr Elliott thought the matter should be left to, the tradespeople, themselves.
Cr Pragnell was of opinion that if they rubbed up against the Carterton people it might affect the next Show in Masterton.
Cr Pauling said the Mayor might, proclaim Friday a half-holiday. This would leave it to the tradespeople to decide for themselves.
After further discussion, in which it was stated to be impossible to. rescind the previous resolution,, the Mayor agreed to proclaim Friday,. October 28tb, a half-holiday.
