CIGARETTE-SMOKING.
The lady correspondent who draws attention in our columns to-day to the prevalence of cigarette-smoking amongst women, and offers a note oi warning against the insidious development of this noxious habit, is doing the best possible service, to her sex. That the habit is gaining a hold upon the women of this Dominion is, unhappily, too true. The ] sooner it is checked, the better wiil it be for the present and future generations. Apart from the degrading effect it has upon the sex whose graces and virtues have been the adoration of man through long ages, the physical deterioration which must inevitably result from the feminine indulgence in narcotics is too serious to contemplate. In this connection it might be well, also, to draw attention to the open manner in which the law is being defied in the sale and delivery of cigarettes to boys who are under age/ and whose health must assuredly be impaired by the indulgence in what we are pleased to term the "frag- . rant weed."
