In his annual leport, presented to the meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society in Masterton on Saturday last, the Preident stated : —I have to regretfully amouii.ee a serious deficiency in the principal sources of revenue. A.-j was Ihe case last year the chief cause of the defection .vas tin lack of public support acorded, tlif. receipts from gates and grandstands alcne accouming for a decrease of f'4s 17s on lar,t year's figures, which in turn were £3B 15s 6d less than those of 1908. There is something radically wrong, and to me it seems incredible that a splendid programme of 45 ever is, for which over C2OO was oequally paid in prizes, should fail to draw the public ii; sufficient numbers to make the gathering pay for itself. As a matter of fact the gate receipts have been steadily declining for a number of years. Inadequate train arrangements and a lack of innovations on the sp6rts programme possibly accounts in a great measure for the diminished attendance of the public. The sale of privileges is also responsible for a considerable discrepancy as compared with last year's, proceeds from the same source, the difference being £lB 18s Bd, or a drop of £29 12s 6d on the amount received in 1908. Entrance fees have also shared in the general reduction, being £22 2s less than the previous year. A comparison with last year's balance sheet shows a shortage of £BS 17s 8d on four itemsgates, grandstands, entrance fees and privileges. Sports expenditure, on the other hand, has been kept well within the mark, and totals £306 16s 3d as against £373 8s 5d and £3Bl los 7d for 1908 and 1909 respectively. A falling-off in receipts was in a measure anticipated by your directors when drafting the chief item of expenditure—the prize list—which they reduced by £65.
