ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Chamber was held at four o'clock, there being present—Messrs K. Brown, G. W. Seiiar, F. Whitton, and H, H. Doaulci, in addition to the members of the Council,
The President, Mr J. 15. Moodie, in moving the adoption of the annual report, which has already been published, stated that during the past year the Chamber had done a great deal of good, and had rendered valuable assistance to some I important projects. The Recovery of Debrs Act, which had been recommended by the Chamber, had been passed, and would bo of great service to the business community. The Masterton-Waipukurau railway movement had not been lost sight of, and there had been considerable agitation in this connection. The League had, so far, succeeded in getting the line upon the list of unauthorised works, and he supposed they would have to be .satisfied. Deputations had waited upoD Ministers from time to time, but with very little effect. In the course of time the Government would see that they meant busjnea, and would do something. Mr Eii Smith, who was present at the meeting by invitation, had been asked by the Council to represent the Chamber nnjjja deputation to the Premier oh Monday next. There was no doubt that if the Prime Minister made any mistakes, Mr Smith, who had a knowledge of the whole business, would be in a position to correct him. There was a lot of valuable country between Masterton and Waipukurau, which was beng starved for the want of railway communication. In regard to the Bankruptcy Act, it was hoped that something would be done at aneary date. , So far as the railway timetable was concerned, it was still unsatisfactory. He was sorry that Mr Danie!!, who took a great interest in the questiou of the Rimutaka railway ! deviation, was not present. He, Mr Moodie, was afraid that those present would not see the deviation j during their lifetime In respect to | mineralogy, a Mineral Prospecting ! Association had been formed, but there was, as yet, nothing to report. The method of callecting the telephone charges had been varied at the request of the Chamber. The North Island Railway League had endeavoured to induce the Government to expend as much revenue upon the North Island lines as'upon the South, but the Premier had not held out much encouragement so far as this session was concerned, In conclusion, Mr Moodie stated that the Chamber had done good work during the year, and he had no doubt it would extend its sphere.of influence for the benefit of the district. He had pleasure in moving the adoption of the report. Mr H. Donald seconded the resolution, which was carried.
I OFFICEKS. The Chairman moved, and Mr W. K. Chennells seconded, that Mr P. W. Carey be elected President for the ensuing year. The resolution was carried unanimously. .
