HEREFORD ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING.
At the annual meeting of the Hereford Cattle Breeders' Association, held in Feilding on Friday last, the President said the credit balance was slightly less than last year, but this was owing to an extraordinary expenditure. On the subject of the Hereord, the President said he had been much impressed with a remark in the "History of the Hereford" to the effect that the cattle were docile. There was an opinion that the Hereford was a wild beast, and the President wished to explode the fallacy. In England the Hereford was used j for ploughing and similar work on account of his docility, and from his own experience Mr Arbon was able to say that the breed was ' a docile one.' The fattening qualities of the Hereford bad been well emphasised in New Zealand. There was at the present time an unlimited demand for Hereford bulls, proving the increasing popularity of the breed. There was also a demand for cows, which it was difficult to meet. The President referred to the bad luck which Mr G. C, Wheeler had had with the bull which he had imported, and which had died in quarantine, and Mr Arbon expressed the regret offthe Association on account of Mr Wheeler's loss.
The report was formally adopted. ' .A motion was adopted instructing the secretary to send a letter to Mr Wheeler, expressing the regret of the Association at his loss. -
Mr Dagg said he consid?red it was a loss not only to Mr Wheeler, but to the whole Dominion. Officers were elected as follows— President, Mr F. W. Arbon (reelected) ; vice-president, Mr A. C. Morton; member of Council, Mr D. P. Buchanan; treasurer, Mr H. Dagg; auditor, Mr G. W. Sellar (re-elected); hor. • solicitor, Mr P. L. Hollings. The President proposed a vote of thankß to Mr fSykes for the able way in which he had carried out his duties during the year. Mr Sykes acknowledged the vote.
Mr Dagg gave notice of motion that the annual meetings be held alternately on the East and West Coast. The meeting then rose.
