LOWER TAUERU.
A most enjoyable dance was given by the Brancepeth employees on the evening of Thursday last, in the Taueru Hall, which had.been tastefully decorated for the occasion with . ferns and greenery. Although it was at first feared that owing to counter attractions the attendance would be small, the guests turned up in good numbers) and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A bounteous and dainty supper was handed round during the evening/by the hosts, who did all in their power to give everyone a good time. Messrs Mcintosh (pianist), and a cornet, supplied the music, while Messrs Cook and Woodham made efficient M.'sC. The success of tho gathering was due in a. great measure to the efforts of tne indefatigable secretary (Mr Mcßae.)
The unpleasant equinoctial gales which have been experienced to the full here have at last abated. Their drying effect on the land , has been counteracted by a steady, though light, fall of rain. The postal arrangements here seem to need a little revision in the matter of mails for the coast. I understand that all letters posted here have to travel first to ■ Masterton, even if they have subsequently to pass through Taueru again on the way to their destination. For instance, a letter posted at Taueru for Carswells on Thursday . afternoon | would not reach, its destination (7 miles) until Monday morning.
