The death is. announced of Mr F. Collis, of White. Rocks, a very old resident of North Otago. The,death is announced, at the age of ninety-one, of Mrs Henry Russell, widow of Mr Henry Robert Russell, who was well-known in Hawke's Bay in the early days. Dr R. V. Hosking, lately of Masterton, and who for some time past has been practicing in Fiji, arrived at Auckland by the Navua on Saturday. Dr Hosking is expected to reach Masterton this evening.

According to a cable received on Saturday, Lord Hawke has retired • from first-class cricket. His name has been associated with the fame of Yorkshire cricket for nearly thirty years, and he has captained his county since 1883.

Another old identity of the Masterton district has passed away, in the person of Mr A. Martin, senr. The deceased, who died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R. Jackson, of Kuripuni, on Sunday afternoon, had attained the ripe age of eighty-two years, and had been in good health until quite recently. The late Mr Martin was engaged in farming operations on the Opaki for i a number of years. He leaves a grown-up, family of nine. The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon* ■■
