BRUTAL MURDER.

WORKOFTHS BLACK HAND

WHOLE FAMILY SLAUGHTERED.

(Received September 6, 2.20 p.m.) ROME, September 5.

A family named Rouvilino, consisting of the father, mother, and six children, were horribly murdered at Pellaro, Calabria. It is alleged the crime was committed by a New York member of the Black Hand Society, and that the motive was -vengeance. The weapon used was an axe.

THE MURDERERS ESCAPE. (-Received Last Night, 11.50 o'clock) ROME, September 6. The shrieks of a child aroused the villagers of Pellaro, which, since the earthquake, has consisted of a collection of wooden houses. The townspeople discovered a child of five years, with its head almost severed, on the threshold of Rouvilino's house. Within, theyfound a baby of four months with its head cut in two. •Rouvilino had been surprised while undressing. He had evidently returned home at two o'clock in the morn' and found four masked murderer:- in hiding. Rouvili o's loaded rifle lay across a chair near by. The murderers escaped. Rouvilino was well-to-do, and respectable. He had lived in America for sor-e years, wher° it is alleged he ha - : dealings with the "Black Hand."

An attempt was made to murder the family a few days previously.
