HOROWHENUA SECOND DAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEV IN, Saturday. The Horowhenua Racing Club's spring meeting concluded to-day in good weather. The going was, however, still heavy. There was a good attendance. The total amount put through the totalisator for the two days was £6OOO, and bookmakers' fees amounted to £426. TURF NOTES.

8A statement is going the rounds to the effect that Mr J. H. Tileon has resigned the position of starter to the Wairarapa Racing Club. I am informed that he has only resigned as such to the Lower Valley Jockey Club.

My attention baa been directed to the fact that practically all the principal papers which publish the New Zealand Cup list have Sir Solo set down as a lour year old. The Sir Laddo colt is in reality only a threeyear old, being counted as such from the Ist August. Oa actual dates, however, he is not yet three years old.

H Fletcher, at Tauherenikau, is gradually getting a team together. Teh present inmates of his boxes are Longner, Purakau, two-year-old filly by Sir Laddo—Betsy, Dogiisb, by Knight Errant— Sunfish, and Marengo, by Soult—Dodona. The latter will mot be put into woik until later in the season.

I understand a Masterten studmaster is negotiating for the purchase of the thoroughbred stallion, Canada, by Finland-r-Alumini. Owners and trainers have responded well in the matter of nominations for the Lower Valley meeting. The'en tries are numeious, and class is much better represented than usual. The presence at the meeting of such horses as Mahuta, Strathmoira, Iranui, Sir Frisco, Merrivonia, Merrie Zealand, Penza, Lady Doris, Bally Shannon, Aimwell, Full Rats, Inspection, Killaloe and Spate should attract the sporting public in large numbers to the fixture. Mr J. H. Pollock is now busily engaged in making the handicap, which are due on Wednesday next. Out of a list of eighty-one horses, fify-one remain in the Naw Zealand Cup after tbe payment of the first acceptance fee. The most notable defections are Master Soult and Lady Lucy, which will be racing in Australia; Roosevelt, Penates, Sir Tristram, Formby and Danube. Last week Los Angeles was spiritedly | backed for a considerable amount, and in the meantime will rule first favourite. California was also heavily backed, and would be more so if backers were not afraid of the son of ban Fran failing to stand a strong preparation. A recent visitor to the Porirua stables considers Diabolo very big in condition, and is of the opinion that it will take Trainer Prosser all his time to get the horse fit to run out a severe two mile race. Others in the list that are at short prices in the betting are Polymorphous. Advocate, Bridge, Ingoda, Cullinan, Foimeden, and Poictiers,. Before the next payment becomes due a number of those nominated will have run at the Martun, Rangitikei, Wanganui and Hawke's Bay fixture. In the meantime there will be the gradual thinning out of the list consequent on lack of form, and failure to get through the naturally severe preparations. Sir Frisco, winner of the two principal races at the Horowhenua meeting last week has [incurred a penalty of 71bs for the New Zealand Cup.
