THE HUNT CLUB MEETING.
(By "Zetland.")
The Wairarapa Hunt Club opens the racing season—ao far as this district is concerned —to-morrow at llareville. The programme is a dlsI tinctly good one, for there are no less than eighty pntries for the seven events. On this occasion class is exceptionally well represented, and as the majority of the contestants are in really forward condition, the racing should be decidedly interesting throughout, more especially as sprint and distance flat events, hurdle races, and steeplechases comprise the sporting "bill of fare',' to be put before the public. The programme will open with the Hunters' Hurdles, aud among the entrants for this race are Mias Hippo, winner of the Steeplechase at the Woodlanda meeting; Uta, from the redoubtable Tilson stable; Sylvia Maid; Sam, a winner at Castlepoint; Te Utuata; and the Lethe-gelding, Sunray. A fine field will line out for the Hack Plat, of five furlongs. Mr T. Ray is represented by Merrie Land and Merrie Fly; Mr R. Buick by The Workman colt, The Flier; Mr W. Bicknell by the Lakeahell gelding, Soman; Mr H. Hodge by Mokoia; Mr A„ G. Pilmer, by Merrie Nat, while other likely starters are First Consul, Field Farl, Egypt, Leahora, Miss Sylvia, Somerset and Rimu. The Wairarapa Hunt Steeplechase, 2 miles, unould be worth going a distance to' witness. Dreamy Daniel, Te Utuata, Rimu, Hinipou, Blue Bell, Tommy, and Soman will probably comprise the field, and as most of these have been acquitting them- I selves creditably over, country the
issue is very open. The seven fur- ) longs Hack Flat will include, among j others, the well Known horses. First | Consul, Golden Butterfly, Merrie j Land, Sir Solo (a New Zealand Cup entrant), Hilarian and British Maid, a fast race and close finish may be anticipated. In the Taratahi Steeplechase form is best represented by Flamingo, who scored in the principal cress country event at the , Manawatu Hunt meeting this month, i Great interest is sure to be evinced !in the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap. Uta and Operation are from the Tilson stable; Hill Lass and Clovial have been getting through good preparations, and Traylock, Vivasci, Rimu and Sam should also see the distance out. The programme will conclude with the Final Steeplechase, two miles, for which there are thirteen entries. After allowing for the withdrawals of some of the com petitors racing earlier in the day, there will be ample material for a stirring contest. Taking everything into, consideration, the Hunt Club should have a most successful gathering. The course is in excellent order, big fields are assured, and the general arrangements are sure to be properly carried out. Spartsmen who intend assisting at the Horowhenua meeting the following day will be able to travel by Palmerston, leaving Maslerton by 5.45 p.m. train on Thursday.
TURF NOTkS.
W. Garrett, the Masterton trainer, has a team of five in work, and they are well forward for the time of the year. Sir Solo, by Sir Laddo—Wepener, has done a fair amount of track work, and looks decidedly well. During he winter he has furnished considerably, and stands over 15.3. His name appears among the nominations for the New Zealand Cup, and being such a sound horse should be one of those to stand a thorough preparation. Sandix, who was spelled during a good part of last season, has been showing improved form on the tracks lately, and may be taken up to the Marton meeting. Embrocation appears to be improving, and properly placed may yet prove his capability to win races. Afterthought, who scored in good company last season, has wintered splendidly, and those who have not seen the Merriwee mare for some months could hardly realise how she has built up. In her first season she was somewhat nf the weedy order, but now has plenty of buth height and size. Vite, by Merriwee—Bluewater, therefore half-sister to tbat good horse Submarine, has only been taken in hand recently, and may not be racing early in the season. Given time she should not fail to follow on the winning lines of her many victorious relatives.
