Dr Cowie, assisted by Drs Prior and Cook, performed a delicate operation upon Mrfl Jarrett, wife of Mr R. O. Jarrett, of Lansdowne. At latest accounts Mrs Jarrett was progressing as favourably as could be expected. .., A very enjoyable function took place in the Arcadia Rooms last evening, when the friends of the Misseß Briarley (2) tendered them a farewell social, on the occasion of their leaving Masterton to reside inWellington. A varied programme, including cards, charades, songs and. dancing was indulged in, and a dainty supper provided by the ladies p£ the party. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

There are very many in Masterton who will regret to hear of the death, which occurred at Auckland on Monday, of the JRev. Father O'Meara. The deceasecfprelate, who was stationed at Feilding, had been in indifferent health for some time, and went to Auckland for a change of scene and air.. The late Father O'Meara was about fifty years of age, and was, a native of Ireland. He arrived in New Zealand twenty-two years ago, and wan Btationed for a number of years at Masterton, where he was exceedingly popular. His remains are to be interred at Feilding to-day,
