EXCITEMENT AT ADELAIDE.
A NARROW ESCAPE. (Received August 22, 10 a.m.) ADELAIDE August 22. A small steamer named the South Africa, carrying 300 tons of dynamite, caught fire at Port Adelaide. The River Brigade manned a lifeboat and subdued the flames after two hours' work. There was tremendous excitement. An explosion would have wrecked most of the town. .
BRAVE AND OTHERWISE. CONGREGATIONS DESERT CHURCHES. (Received Last Night, 10.50 o'clock.) ADELAIDE, August 22. There were twelve persons aboard the South Africa when the outbreak occurred. Seven got away in a boat. The second mate and second engineer, with three firemen, remained, and put- up a splendid fight, keeping the flames in check until the firefloat arrived. When the news spread that there was a possibility of an explosion, there was great excitement ashore. . Congregations deserted the churches and hurried to their homes.
