TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.") Castout, by Caetashore—-High-land Mary, has been purchased by Mr J. R. McDonald, of Levin, and will probably be seen out in hurdla events iti the North Island this season. Tbe Awapuni trained Multiform colt. Polymorphous, has been strongly supported during the last few days in the New Zealand Cup betting. The owners of Master Soult anticipate starting the borse in the Melbourne Cup. The son of Soult 13 to race at the A.J.C. meeting ri3Xt month, ai;d it depends upon how he shapes whether he will be taken to Flcmingtor. Several accidents to riders occurred at Riccaiton on Saturday. The most Berious injuries were sustained by H. Telford, who dislocated his shoulder when Tauira fell in the Sydenham Hurdles, and by T Pritchard, who fractured his collarbone when Kal tere came down in the Lincoln Steeplechase. G. A. Pine and Rangi Thomson escaped with minor injuries when their mounts fell.

Paisano is a Spanish word, and stands for countryman. The champion hurdler will be remembered as one of the best and consistent horses bred in New Zealand in late years. Weights for the New Zealand Cup are due on Saturday. The handicapper will not have much trouble to assess the allotments of those horses which raced in handicaps during last season, and probably most of his study will be in the apportionment of the weights for the three year old division. Nominations for the Wairarapa Hunt Club meeting close on Saturday with the secretary, Mr Norman H. James. A lengthy list i 3 confidently anticipated. Gold Lace, Effort and Crucinella were landed at Kandwick in good order. Being in forward condition when they left Wellington, they are probably among the track workers now. The son of St. Paul has proved to be an out and out stayer, consequently should make a really good hurdle racing candidate.

Messrs Stead Bros,' Ristori, by Koyal Artillery—Helen Faucit, was sold this week for 25 guineas, a remarkably low price when her highclass breeding is taken into consideration. Another highly bred mare, Curetta, by Hotchkiss—Edith Cureton, realised only 30 guineas. The Auckland three year olds, Apellon and Ashby, are in slow work at Ellerslie. Both are engaged in the New Zealand Cup. The Canterbury Jock°y Club pnid out £6390 in stakes over the Grand National meeting. This amount was distributed among no les3 thaii 46 owners. Horses backed in Chriatcburch last week for the New Zealand Cup were Martist, Roosevelt. Poictiers, and Danube.
