LONDON MARKETS

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S EEFORT.

The Commerce and Tourists Division cf Agriculture, Commerce, ai.d Tourists, has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, August 6th, 1910— Mutton—The market is quiet but steady; on the whole there is a slight improvement during this week. The average price for Canterbury mutton I to-day is 3£d. Good quality Canterbury light weight 3|d, North Island heavy weight 3|d per lb.

Lamb. —There has been a bettertone in the market this week and a good demand continues. Canterbury sd. Other than Canterbury 4|d per lb.

Butter. -The market is quiet but moderate business doing. Best qualities are getting scarce. Siberian, a good demand at JOls per cwt. Danish 112 a per cwt.

Cheese.—The market is firm and supplies are decreasing. White 575. Coloured: There is an increasing demand at 56s per cwt. Canadian 55s per cwt. Hemp.—The market is dull and very little business doing. New Zealand good fair on spot per ton £24. Fair grade £2l 5 1 --. Forward shipment, about the same price. Stock of New Zealand hemp 3z7 tons. Fair current Manila, on spot, per ton £2O Forward shipment £2O ss. The output' for the week from Manila was 24,000 bales.

STOCK MARKET. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report having conducted a very successful sale on behalf of Mr Joseph Transome, Pleckville, yesterday, Notwithstanding thy rough weather prevailing the attendance was satisfactory, outside buyers baI ing conspicuous esptckilly from the Wairarapa. The cows were an cxtra good lot, in first-class i-.i .fiuv- , creditable to the vendor, se.ti,..! w«.ii into the Jersey strain Business at auction was very animated, so much so at times it was impossible to take the bids quick enough. The majority, were early calvers and sold at prices ranging from £7 to £ll 10?. Eight of the best cows averaged £lO 18s 6d, 20 averaged £9 17s, the average for the whole herd being £9 ss, which establishes a record in the Forty Mile Bush district, with one solitary exception, for the last ten years. A line of ten 2yr heifers. October calvers, all showing great quality, were keenly competed for, and although submitted with the option of picking one or more were snapped up in a line by a buyer from Carterton at £7 15s each. The yearling empty heifers—an exceptional lot—were purchased by Mrs Kutherford, of Alfredton, at the satisfactory price Of £3 12s 6d. Pigs, milk cans, poultry, and sundries sold at full market rates. Several lines of springing heifers and cows on behalf of neighbours, were also offered, and with the exception of a couple all changed harads at prices in excess of vendors' anticipations.
