THE SPREAD OF GORSE.
Settlers in some part 3of the Masterton Countv are complaining of the spread of gorse which, unless checked, will, it is feared, prove a serious menace to farming operations The riverbeds are a harbour for gorse, and successive floods have brought the seeds down and spread them broadcast. As gorse has not been scheduled a noxious weed, within the meaning of the Act, by the local authority, tha officers of the Agricultural Department are powerl.ss ti do anything in the matter. Sjme yaars ago the question of scheduling go-rsa was considered, but no action was taken. It is understood that a. petition will be presented to the Masterton County Council, praying that body to includa gorse in its schedule of noxious weeds, so that the officials of the Agricultural Department may be enabled to take repressive measures.
