SCIENTIFIC AGRICULTURE.

The Government has taken steps to secure the .services of a roan with a thoroughly good scientific knowledge of agriculture to undertake important work for the Agricultural Department, The inquiries that are to be made will bs specially directed towards Denmark and Canada, as it is believed that the experience afforded by recent developments in those countries will be of considerable value to agriculturists in New Zealand. No particulars as to the actual work of the proposed appointee itp yet available, but it is understood that his appointment will mark the beginning of a much more vigorous policy of usefulness on the part of the department, especially in connection with its experimental work. Developments of late years in other agricultural countries have demonstrated the great value of special training for the officers charged with the duty of supervising the many important operations that have to be carried (Out, and it is in this direction that the proposed forward step will probably be found to go. The expenditure that will be involved will not be small, but it is believed that it will he more than justified by the better results and increased efficiency that will be secured from a most important branch of the Agricultural Department's work.
