HOCKEY NOTES.
The ladies' representatives will be picked after Kia Toa v. High School match on Saturday. For the New Zeal mi Ladies' Hockey championship tournament at Nelson at the end of the month entries have been received from Auckland, Taranaki, War.ganui, Wellington, two teams, Nelson. Euller, Westport, Greymouth, Wairarapa, Otago. Hawke'a Bay, .Canteriinrj-, and South Canterbury. The annual five-aside men's tournament will be held to-day week at Lansdowne, entries for which doss to-nigbt, are coming in freely, evidently is not ! ;as popular in Australia as in New Zealand, judging by the poor attendances recorded at matches, the New Soush , Wales v. Victoria match at Sydney | last week only drawing an attendance j of 200. I
The Otago Ladies' Association Ives suggested that the Canterbury Association should join with it in askirg the Nelson Association for an extetsion of the time within which entries for the tournament would-be received. The Canterbury Association had forwarded a similar request, and it is believed a number of North Island Associations have done tha same.
The meeting on Saturday of Welington and Canterbury for the Naw Zealand challenge shield is causing great interest; in hockey circles throughout tne I. opinion. So far, Wellington has withstood this year's challengers, but on Saturday thuy will have a tough proposition to lace. Mr Walton, the Wellington selector, has had ample opportunity of finding the weaknesses in his team, and he has discarded some of the old playera for new blood. Canterbury have picked their team strictly on form, and it includes a number of new men. Ihe match will be played at the famous Day's Bay ground, and should result in a great contest. The Victoria Hockey Association has sent its senior rep. team on tour this season, and 1 ave played New South Wales twice, the results being New South Wales 4, Victoria 1; Victoria 2, New South Wales 1. Both games were played with forty minute spells. The Canterbury Association has decided to notify t l ie Wellington Association that owing to the lateness of the notice, it would be impossible to send a junior reresenta* tive team to Wellington this season. At the last meeting of the New Zealand Referees' Association, the Wairarapa referees asked for a ruling on Rule 11, relating to "oilside." The request was referred to the Management Committee to reply to. A similar request received from the South Canterbury Association wa3 similarly dealt with.
