THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1910. AN OBJECT LESSON.
One of the undesigned results of Mr Roosevelt's tour round Europe has been that it has provided an object lesson for Kings. Many of them were amazed at the recaption i which Mr Koosevelt received from 1 their own people, and then they asked themselves, What is tha secret of this man Roosevelt? This was especially the case with some of the youngur Kings. And having come intu personal contact with him it is inevitable that in the coming years they will take a greater interest in the p.fFairs of the United States and of the part which Mr j Roosevelt plays therein. A 'miration j and knowledge of him wiii act «s a j sriirul'is, s«'! it is difficult to foresee !
where such influence will end. They at 'east do see that the secret of his influence is not that of position or
of wealth but of personality and character. Another important factor I of Mr Rousevelt's tour is that in ] every country in which he has been thers dwell the mothers and fathers and brothers aad sisters of thousands jof man and women in the United States. The United States is an epitome of Europe. To these he is a visitor from their own kin, whether they be Austrians, Hungarians, Italians, German?, French, Swedes, Dane's, or Norwegians. All these lands constantly receive large remittances from their kin in the United States. They correspond with them, and to them the United States is a land of liberty. The tragedy is that Europa has lost some of its best blood to that land, and the problem for the States of Europe is how to make life in them so dear and pleasant that there will be no compulsion for their sons to seek exile across the seas. The task of the United States, on the other hand, is to see that the ill conditions of life in Europa are not reproduced in that new land. And that is the vital fact behind what is known as the Roosevelt policy. The United States and Canada are practically the last acres of the world in which men
have been able to start Ufa afresh, without ancient burdens upon their shoulders. They have not made the best use of that new start, as casual visitor can see. The time of trial will come when these new lands have to put up the notice "Full." And then, according to the way in which they have let the great primal sources of food and wealth be distributed, will their burdens and problems be. A further testing time will come for Europe, too, whsn there aire no longer new lands f;r her sons to seek beyond the seas. Fur then if the shoe pinches at home will coma the acute time of discontent, of inquiry, of revolution, And only those States which are based on the general good will be able to stanu. It is because Mr Roosevelt foresees some of these things, and does not wait till it is too late to take action that he has seized ihold of the imagination of thosewho believe: for the; nation as for the man is td those who will, and are of good will. Perhaps some foreshadowing of all thJS is responsible for the extraordinary way in which the Rulers of Europe have gone out of their way to show goodwill to Mr Roosevelt, and led them to ask, What is his secret? It is difficult to recall any other such triumph of personality.
