MINERS ON STRIKE.

DISPUTE AT[PAPAROA. CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE. FBy Telegraph—Press Association" GREYMOUTH, July 30. The Paparoa.miners refuged to start work yesterday morning unless two miners who had been suspended were reinstated. This the manager refused to do, and the mine is idle. It is a little unfortunate that the strike has taken place at the present time, as the company is trying its best to fulfil an Admiralty order. There are over 100 men employed in and about the mine. The manager, it is reported, has refused to have any conference wilh the men until work is resumed in the mine. When the miners go to work he will be prepared to further consider the casa of the two men suspended.

RE-INSTATEMENT OF DISMISSED MEN DEMANDED. By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYMOUTH, July 31 Matters connected with the Paparoa Mine remain in status quo since the union sent its ultimatum demanding the reinstatement of and compensation to Smeaton and Harris The manager, Mr Watson, says he cannot retract from his position, as there had been three previous cases within a fortnight of damage to mine property, causing Ten hours' delay, on the part of I he I msn; hence the necessity for special notice. Smeaton was only employed on wages temporarily where the shot wan fired, otherwise he contracts in other parts of the mine; and he was' filling in time till a fresh contract was laid out.
