ACTOR'S NARROW ESCAPE.
The departure of thd tvlararoa for Lyttleton from Wellinpt.n was marked by what came periiu ,s-y near being a serious if not a faul accident. The ship had swung clear of the wharf, bow pointing inwards, when a belated passenger, a memoerj of the Clarke-Mcynell company (tor whose convenience thw ahip iiad l>uci< detained), hurried along a minute or two too late. A ropa wks thrown to him from the foVccla head of the vessel, which the intending passenger, Mr Herbert, caught. While being hauled aboard by this means his strength gave out and he fell into the water. Constable Wad?, who was in the vicinity escorting an unruly inebriate to the police station, rushed to 4he scene, aDd divesting himself of his coat, went over the side into the water. He succeeded in dragging Mr Herbert oa to a stringer, fnm whence he was hauled to the top of the wharf with a rope. There wa3 considerable- excitement amongst some of the passengers upon the Mararoa, which p-it back, and took the rescued man on to Lyttleton. Constable Wade was warmly congratulated by those who witnessed his plucky action.
